Decluttering Your Wardrobe Is More Important Than You Think

Can you even see everything in your closet? No idea where your favorite black jeans went? Do you have 10+ pairs of jeans? Well, then this post is for you! And it’s actually for me too. I am a clothing HOARDER. And there’s basically no point of it because I only wear the items I keep out on my clothing rack. Or the jeans I drape over my vanity chair. So for 365 days of the year, the rest of my wardrobe only exists within my closet walls. Sound all too familiar? Today I’m going to convince you that decluttering your wardrobe is more important than you think.

While reading Game Changers by Dave Asprey (by reading I mean only the first 20 pages so far – each page is JAM packed with info and additional things to do!) I learned a little something about making decisions.

The first thing I learned was that we all have a “bank” of a certain number of good decisions we can make each day. After this number, your brain essentially gets decision fatigue and the decisions you make aren’t as good. There are some sources that say we make 35,000 decisions each day. Crazy, I know. Whether this number is inflated or not, before we get to work or school, we’ve already made decisions on what to eat, drink, brush your hair, do your makeup and to get out of bed. Most importantly (for this post at least) we decide what to wear.

Decluttering Your Wardrobe Is More Important Than You Think

To make better decisions throughout the day, Dave Asprey suggests making less menial decisions. This means making fewer decisions about what you eat and what you wear. Pick out your meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) for the week and stick to them. Meal prepping is not only good for your health but good for your decision bank. If you know what you’re going to eat, there’s no decision to be made for that freeing up decisions for more important subjects.

Same goes for what to wear every day.

Tips for Decluttering Your Wardrobe:

  1. Pick a work “uniform”. What items do you wear to work all the time? Take your favorite pair of jeans, cardigan, blouse etc. and put them aside. Now remove anything that doesn’t mix and match with these items. I work for DVF, so many of my work clothes are colorful. I pair these items back with a lot of black basics.
  2. Get a garment rack. Add these items to your garment rack so they’re easy to access every day.  Your uniform should be so easy to create all from this rack. Add your most worn shoes underneath. In the morning it should be 1, 2, 3. This will even help you plan out outfits for a few days in advice.
  3. Every time you go in your closet remove an item you haven’t worn in years. This will be the game changer. If you’re like me, there is no extra time to take an entire day to clean out your wardrobe. Plus, after learning all about decisions, we know this is inefficient. After an hour or so of deciding what stays and what goes, you’ll start making bad decisions. Keeping things you don’t really want and getting rid of items you probably wanted to keep.

I know I picked a work uniform for this example, but this can work for your weekend looks too. Just separate them on the rack. The idea is to use this rack for basics. Your garment rack should never be jam-packed. Getting rid of old clothes in your closet is equally as important. Don’t skip this step.

If you eliminate this “what to wear” decision every day, you’ll be sure to make better decisions throughout the day.  And if you like decluttering, I’ve also written some tips on decluttering your bag.
