I’ve been holding off on sharing this post because there are a few finishing touches that still need to get done. Like hanging my Gray Malin artwork. But, I’ve gotten to the point where I’m over waiting. And I get so many DMs on Instagram every time I share the space so I think it will just be easier to have everything up. So, today I’m sharing my black and white bathroom renovation!
First, let me start out by saying I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. The black and white kind of just happened. Mostly because making a decision on a color cripples my ability to function. #LibraProblems. Due to my lack of color, I’m hoping to add in more warm brown/ wooden elements to lessen the overall contrast in what has become my black and white bathroom.
Previously I told that my vision for the bathroom was somewhat vintage because I wanted it to match the feel of our 100+-year-old home. And while the bathroom that was there wasn’t bad, it must have been redone within the past 10-15 years. And in my opinion, it didn’t match the space:
So right before everything closed down for three months here in New York, back in February my dad, my cousin and Tom’s dad fully gutted out the bathroom. It’s the only bathroom in our home, so it probably wasn’t my best idea to push to get this done, although I’m happy we did. I think we would have lived with the brown tiles for a while if we had decided to move in as-is.
I also hadn’t picked out the tiles, medicine cabinet, and bathtub before they started. Mostly because I was planning on keeping the toilet and sink and thought I could make quick choices on a few select things. But both were broken during the demo. So I ended up having to pick those out too.
Full demolition of the bathroom:
My dad, my cousin, Tom, and his dad literally removed everything from this bathroom down to the studs! It was pretty crazy. It also made me realize how much garbage it creates which made me feel guilty. So I purchased these unpaper towels, mason jars with bamboo tops, and these bamboo glass containers to make myself feel a little better about my impact on the environment. LOL yes seriously. Every little bit counts!
After installing the tub and floors we did the wainscoting:
Tom’s dad is a carpenter so he was able to make the wainscoting for us, which was amazing. It’s also so nice to have something that they made together as a part of our home. Tom and I decided we wanted heated floors as well. Since it’s the only bathroom we have right now, might at well be bougie, right?!
After this, my bathroom didn’t have a toilet for two weeks. And it didn’t have a sink for another month. So we were going back and forth painting the house (ourselves) and doing work in the middle of a pandemic. Since we weren’t living there, it was a good opportunity to have the floors sanded and stained and a new boiler and hot water heater installed too.

I’m so happy with how everything turned out. Some final thoughts and tips: The bathtub is the perfect size for soaking, and is still easy to stepover to shower in. The top flush toilet is kind of annoying the pull up top sticks for some reason but I’m hoping when the matte black piece comes it will fix this issue. All in all the bathroom came in within my budget of $6,000, the toilet alone was $1,000 of that so if I hadn’t done that it would have been a lot less. Besides having to pay for plumbers to come to move our drains and adust the shower to fit the round center water control I chose, Tom and our families were able to do the work an save us costs there.
