Tips for Layering Your Clothes – Layering Always Ups Your Style Game

Tips for Layering Collage with Staples and Outfit Inspiration

This topic first crossed my desktop over seven years ago. Now more than ever, layering is the string that ties your outfit together. A collar pop or a crew neck peeking through is all you need for some cool-girl layering in the colder months. And in opposition, a simple toss of a sweater over your t-shirt when temps begin to rise. I’ve included a few of my favorite tips for effortless layering along with the basics I grab for an eased layered look.

Tips for Layering Your Clothes

  • Start with the basics. Having T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, and button-downs are the perfect layering pieces. If you don’t have these or are looking to refresh, I have a roundup of my favorites below.
  • Work with different lengths. Bring out those cropped sweaters and pair them with that button-down shirt.
  • Make sure you can see your layers. This will prevent your outfit from looking bulky or bunched up.
  • Start with lightweight items, like a t-shirt then add those oversized chunky knits.
  • Get creative. Wear your leather jacket under your oversized wool coat. Sweaters over dresses.

Basics To Use To Help You Layer Your Clothing

Basics should be the most grabbed-for items in your closet. I’ve gone through numerous brands, styles, and materials over the years to find my favorites. I compiled the below list to help you layer your clothing in any season.

1. Black T-Shirt

Layer under black sweaters, grey, and other cool-toned knits. I love getting thicker quality black T-shirts since I wear them year-round, and there is less chance of them getting stained. This brand also offers free customization.

2. White T-Shirt

A crisp white t-shirt will be your best friend in the winter under warmer cashmere knits. If you’re a spiller like me, this one is so affordable.

3. Neutral T-Shirt

When it comes to layering, I tend to gravitate towards using t-shirts vs. long-sleeved shirts for a sleeker look. Less material in the arm makes everything look less taught. So having a third neutral-colored shirt you can wear is always a nice option. This one is super lightweight and a bit oversized.

4. Black Long Sleeve Shirt

Similar to the above I’m always going to go for quality in darker hues because they tend to last longer for me. This shirt is fitted with a thick material. I also own it in white. Perfect for those really cold days when a T-shirt isn’t going to keep you warm enough.

5. White Long Sleeve Shirt

I love seeing a little wrist layering. So having a crisp white long-sleeve shirt pop out from your collar and your arms is important. No dingy white shirts here. Also looks great under a blazer for a more casual look.

6. White Button Down Shirt

The tomboy shirt is the perfect button-down to layer with. It’s tailored just right so you have room but it’s not oversized. Great for wearing under an oversized chunky cardigan.

7. Linen Button Down Shirt

Using your summer linen button-downs is a key way to stay comfortable and not overheat. I love shopping in the men’s section and I own a few variations of this style from this brand.

8. Knit Sweater

This sweater is the perfect length to layer over a button-down and also throw over your shoulders. I own it in the camel color along with navy and I frequently use it in all seasons.

Below you’ll find several outfit ideas that I hope help inspire your next outfit. Or even spark an interest in your once-loved items already in your closet!
