Since we’ve all heard the news that skinny jeans are out, today I’m sharing a style guide on how to style mom jeans, boyfriend jeans, and any other baggy non-skinny jeans you come across while shopping for Spring.
The skinny, on the skinny jean
Skinny jeans have NEVER looked good on me. I’m 5’5″ and I have medium-sized calves, so truth be told I’m happy we’re nearing the end of the skinny trend. But this doesn’t mean you still can’t rock skinny jeans and look like an edgy, cool, fashion-forward city girl that I love so much. It’s just more of a reason to open up your wardrobe to other options.
Change ? is ? good ?
But what’s the right fit for you?
Straight, slim straight, bootcut, demi boot, wide-leg crop, mom jeans, dad jeans, boyfriend jeans, baggy jeans… The names are overwhelming TBH. While there are many ways to describe jeans, the most important part is not the name but that you feel comfortable in your jeans.
These terms are mostly put in place for marketing and there’s no true industry standard on the modified-crop-boyfriend-jeans. Or any other style name for that matter.
So if you love boyfriend jeans by one brand, you may not love them in another brand. You may not even love another boyfriend-jeans-style by the same brand.
? Keep this in mind while shopping.
Favorite brands: mom jeans, boyfriend jeans, baggy jeans
+ Madewell (great size range)
+ Jen 7 Jeans (7 for all Mankind’s little sister, I also love 7FAM)
+ Everlane (in the pants category, but they fit like denim)
+ Unpublished (I grab these locally in Westchester from Lola New York)
Tips on how to style mom jeans, boyfriend jeans, baggy jeans
+ Wear something fitted or tucked in on top. Too much material can look messy and unflattering.
+ Don’t be afraid to tuck. I love a bodysuit or even a baggy shirt fully tuck into loose-fitting jeans.
+ When in doubt pair with a white tee and sneakers for a cool casual look.
+ Layer. If you don’t like tight tops or showing your hips, layer a white button-down with a sweater or sweatshirt over. This works best with a boot cut or any jeans with less material. So try to stay away from a wide leg with this paring.
Whether you have skinny jeans fatigue, or can’t understand why you must give up your best jeans in your closet, I hope you choose to enjoy the change that this trend has brought us. Who’s grabbing some new jeans this week? Shop my favorites below.
