Something I love to think about when I purchase a new item is the cost per wear. Can you blame me? I did go to school for business. It’s a great tool for decision making when you’re shopping for something new. I mean, how many times will you wear that dress realistically?
So today, I’m sharing how I styled one dress three ways. My go-to rule when I’m purchasing something is to think of a minimum of three different ways I will wear it. If can’t come up with three ways, then the cost per wear will usually be too high.
So what is Cost Per Wear exactly?
Cost per wear for your clothing or accessories would be:
Take the cost of the item then,
DIVIDE it by the number of times you have worn (or will wear) it,
EQUALS your cost per wear.
Aren’t you happy you listened during that college algebra class so you can understand this real-life math? LOL me neither.
Here’s an example using this dress:
Cost $548 / 3 potential ways to wear = $182 cost per wear
It’s also the reason I’m investing in more expensive quality pieces in my wardrobe.
Want a good excuse to buy that $300 bikini? Think of 10 ways you can wear it. Your cost per wear will be only $30! Ha!
So why am I really investing in more expensive items?
Mostly for the quality. I could tell you I’ll wear a fast fashion item twenty times, but the chances of that item making it to its twentieth wear are slim. So I’m slowing down my shopping but spending a bit more than I usually would per item.
One Dress Three Ways – How And When I would wear my New DVF Lou Mini Dress
1. With a sweater and slides to work (Remeber, I work for DVF)
Working in fashion means my dress code is somewhat lenient. Trust me, I realize I could have never worn it this way if I was still at Morgan Stanely! Although if you work in a semi-corporate environment, this dress would also look fab with a black blazer and heels!
2. Weekend casual paired with a jean jacket and sneakers.
The perfect look for a Summer BBQ or Friday night drinks!
3. Elevated, perfect for brunch or an event, with booties and a baker boy cap.
Paired with a smaller bag and heeled booties will make your look next level. I grabbed my heart sunnies to play on the feminine ruffles.
Sizing
I normally wear a size 0 [zero] in DVF clothing, I’m wearing a size 4 in this dress. I wanted the ruffles and the overall look to be effortless and flowy, so while the 2 fit me I sized up one more for style.
Quality
No wrinkles or rips here! Plus, this dress also comes with a slip underneath which is such a perk IMO.

Cost per wear will help you reevaluate how you shop. In today’s world, there is so much noise and I want to make both myself and you better shoppers. I hope this post helps you justify adding something good to your closet!

This is a great article. One of my style tips is not to buy it if you can’t style it 3 different ways.
