Bathroom Renovation – My Vision for the Space and Sconces!

Tom told me, “you don’t even notice a bathroom sconce, make a decision or I’m buying something from Home Depot.” You guys know those are fighting words LOL. But, I will give it to him, before redoing our bathroom, I definitely never looked up at a vanity sconce. I had to go look in his parent’s downstairs bathroom to even remember if there was a scone in there! Point taken, Tom.

That said, while I value Tom’s opinion, there was no way I was letting him pick out the last item I needed for my Pinterest perfect bathroom, I mean the only bathroom in our house and it was old so we, of course, had to redo it, you know for safety. The tub could fly through the ceiling at any moment in an old home.

So, I searched high and low all over the interwebs for the one. Not too big or small or too antique or modern, while it had to be matte black to match, I didn’t want anything too black. Yea, really.

Today I’m sharing my bathroom renovation including my vision for the space I’m also sharing some really awesome sconces I found during my search. While they didn’t match what I was looking for, they’re all so good I had to share them with you!

Be sure to check out my interior inspiration for our new home.

Bathroom Renovation – Here’s What The Bathroom Looked Like Before:

There was nothing wrong with the bathroom before. I even wanted to keep the sink and toilet but they broke when we were gutting the bathroom.

Bathroom Renovation – My Vision for the Space

I wanted something clean and new that also matched the old bones of the house. My overall goal is to not make a 100+-year-old house look like something it’s not. You know, too new looking.

So I originally was going to go with gold hardware but it’s so hard to find matching vintage-inspired gold fixtures, towel rails, hooks for behind the door, etc. So matte black was much easier and more neutral IMO.

I personally found all my inspiration on Pinterest. This helped me understand what I liked/ didn’t like. It’s also important to know if you plan on having the room you’re redoing match the rest of your house. You don’t want a modern brand new bathroom if you’re never planning on redoing your kitchen. You’re better off trying to play-off the look your home already has.

How I Gathered my Ideas

While Pinterest helps a lot, I personally don’t know if I’m going to like something until I see it. Which is why it was important to me to create a space I could see.

I used the screen-shot tool on my computer (snipping tool on a PC works too!) and pasted what I liked into a word document.

Then when I decided on some items, like the style of the sink, I copied and pasted those items into a different document. It’s nothing to scale but it personally gave me a good idea on whether I would like what I picked out or not.

I actually went with a rectangular black mirror, a similar pedestal sink, matte black hardware, and a black sconce. Making these easy little collages really helped me choose. Have I mentioned as a Libra decisions are not my thing?

Let’s talk Bathroom Sconces

While choosing the tile was a hard decision to make, I never imagined that I couldn’t find a sconce I liked. I kind of had an idea in my head that I wanted to look old, but there’s a lot of noise on the internet. And in-store as well.

After a bit of a search I found some key-words that helped to define what I was looking for:

Lacquer – A material that gives off an art deco vibe through its glossy shine.

Alabaster – Is a stone that gives off a warm early vibe. I want to have natural elements in my home so this material would be a great addition.

Edison bulbs – Those are the light bulbs that you can see through with the interesting vintage electric wires in the center.

I ended up going with this sconce from West Elm.

I wish I had space to have sconces on both sides of the mirror. It gives the space a nice balance. This is why although so many of the sconces above are beautiful, they just don’t work as a solo light above the mirror.

I’m so excited that we’re almost done with the bathroom now. While our new toilet is in, we can’t use or sink or bathtub/shower until our matte black fixtures are made. They can’t be made until the factory in California reopens. We ordered them a week before they closed, just missing the cut! I’d rather have everyone safe of course anyway, but it’s still a bit of a bummer.

Once we’re all done I’ll share a full reveal! Are you redoing any spaces in your home? Right now we’re working on the kitchen. If you like this post let me know in the comments and I’ll share that makeover as well!
