For those who know and love the North Fork Long Island, it feels like the best-kept secret. Wineries, farms, small businesses, fields of lavender, beaches on Peconic Bay and the Long Island sound, less congestion than its southern counterpart, the Hamptons; what more could you ask for? After a stay at The Harvest Inn Bed & Breakfast, I ask myself how do I leave this place?
The truth is I technically don’t have to. My husband’s family has owned a home on the North Fork for two generations now. So while I’ve recommended my favorite things to do on the Nork Fork, I’ve never been able to recommend a place to stay. Until now. The Harvest Inn Bed & Breakfast feels like your home away from home. Making it the perfect spot for your three-day getaway to the North Fork Long Island.
Here’s everything you need to know about your next North Fork getaway, the itinerary included.
The Harvest Inn
Tucked behind lush greenery, and a coy pond equipt with a mini waterfall, pulling up to the Harvest Inn Bed & Breakfast in Peconic New York feels like an oasis. And if you’ve never been to a Bed & Breakfast before, like me, truly exciting. It’s the easiest thing I’ve done outside my comfort zone all year.
As Jackie (@jackiegiardina, livingaftermidnite.com) and I pull up, we are greeted by the B&B owners, Stacey and Steven Isaacs. Walking up to the inn, you’ll first notice the beautiful wrap-around porch and then welcoming glass french doors. Finally, upon your entrance, you see what looks like original wide plank wooden floors. I’m a sucker for character and original details in both hotels, similar to the Ocean House and homes. So I felt comfortable and confident in my decision to stay at my first B&B the moment we arrived.
The main floor has a large formal dining table that seats eight and a living room where guests can play games like chess and marble checkers by the fireplace.
The Harvest Room
There are five rooms all on the second floor at The Harvest Inn, and The Harvest Room is the largest with a spa tub and fireplace. The king-size bed is cozy and the room gets the most immaculate light. While I didn’t need the fireplace this summer, I can imagine the coziest winter night snuggled up in the king-size bed, watching Netflix after a long day of wine tasting.
The black, white, and gold bathroom is stocked with everything you need. I’m biased, but any B&B that has Beekman 1802 products for their guests to use is grade-A in my book.
Right outside your room, there’s a snack and water closet that all guests can utilize. There’s also a desk in the center of the hallway and two red chairs with a side table at the end next to the window.
Where to Eat
One of the best parts of staying at The Harvest Inn is that with your stay you get a full three-course breakfast each morning. Stacy is a trained chef and the meals she comes up with are nothing short of delicious. I think my favorite was the stuffed french toast croissant and the fresh wellness juice shots!
Before giving you the low-down on all my favorite spots I will tell you this. Make reservations wherever your can. And make them at least a week in advance.
Breakfast / Lunch
Country Corner Cafe 55765 NY-25, Southold
Breakfast. If you like those golden, crunchy deep-fried home fries, (like the ones Friendly’s has), you will love the Country Corner Cafe. But that’s not the only good thing, the coffee is delicious, they offer specialty coffees as well, make your own omelets and the best pancakes!
North Fork Roasting Co 55795 Main Rd, Southold
Grab a coffee to go. The iced bee’s knees coffee is delicious (honey, espresso, oat milk)!
Love Lane Kitchen 240 Love Ln, Mattituck
We went to Love Lane Kitchen for lunch and split the chicken cesar salad and then lobster roll. Their lobster roll is one of my favorites! I also tried the lavender honey lemonade and it’s a new personal favorite that I’m dying to make myself.
Dinner
North Fork Table 57225 Main Rd, Southold
My life was forever changed after dinner at the North Fork Table. I’ve literally dreamed of broken beans (cannellini beans, Jersey corn, parmesan, summer truffles) and the duck tot and caviar(sour cream, dried onion, smoke). Everything here was exceptional – from the service to the decor I truly don’t believe there’s an item on the menu you won’t love. Our order: Broiled Little Neck Clams, Shinnecock Scallops Plancha, Roasted Long Island Duck Breast, Olive Oil Sponge Cake and the Strawberry Crostata. If you go to only one place I recommend eating this is the one.
The Halyard 58775 County Rd 48, Greenport
This past trip was the first time I’ve ever sat inside the Halyard. The big appeal of this spot is its wrap-around pouch that overhangs the Long Island Sound. That said, the inside is also beautiful and it was an exceptionally hot evening so I was totally cool with being inside. By the time we made reservations, three days in advance, there were no outdoor seats available. Here’s what I recommend ordering: the Summer truffle tartine and the Summer truffle cavatelli pasta.
First and South 100 South St, Greenport
We got the shishito peppers, kale caesar, and the really good burger with crispy fried onions and gruyere cheese. Everything again was exceptional.
Brix and Rye 308A Main St, Greenport
While we didn’t make it to Brix and Rye for this trip it’s one of my local Greenport favorites. The meatballs, pizza, and craft cocktails in a speakeasy-style space.
L to R: Lobster Roll and Cesar Salad, Love Lane Kitchen / Wild Atlantic Halibut and Truffle Cavatelli, The Halyard / Broken Beans and Shinnecock Scallops Plancha, North Fork Table
What to Do
Wineries
Kontokosta 825 North Rd, Greenport
There’s a $10 reservation fee per person, and you have to make a reservation, but trust me it’s worth it. We did a wine tasting and then purchased a bottle of wine and walked down the overlook where you can see the beach below you. It’s the perfect spot for the most Instagramable photos.
Bridge Lane 35 Cox Neck Rd, Mattituck
The Bridge Lane Bubbles in a can is my new favorite drink. It’s perfect for parties at home (the can is a fun white and rainbow spot and stripe). On the weekends you can get fresh donuts from the Nofodoco and a cheese board.
Pindar 37645 NY-25, Peconic
Conveniently right across the street from The Harvest Inn, you’ll find the Pindar vineyards. We didn’t have time to visit and do a wine tasting. But upon arrival after we settled in, Stacey made us a beautiful charcuterie board with the most delicious rosé from Pindar.
Macari 150 Bergen Ave, Mattituck
While we didn’t go on this trip, Macari is one of my favorite wineries. It’s a beautiful calm cool space, with amazing wine.
RGNY 6025 Sound Ave, Riverhead
I’ve been dying to try RGNY for their wine with an ice pop in your glass!
Left Kontokosta / Right Bridge Lane
Beaches
The Harvest Inn has towels, chairs, and Southold beach passes for all guests.
Town Beach 53005 County Rd 48, Southold
Perfect beach on the Long Island Sound to chill or for the family. There’s even a swing set in the sand!
67 Steps Beach 66 Sound Rd, Greenport
This beach is rocky and there are literally 67 steps to get down to the beach. It’s a beautiful place to sit and read and I imagine you’ll never see many children there because it’s so rocky.
New Suffolk Beach 2650 Jackson St, New Suffolk
Located on Peconic Bay, this is the beach I normally go to when I’m at my husband’s family Summer home, again perfect to chill and for the entire family. Legend’s restaurant and Case’s Place restaurant are within walking distance from the beach. You definitely want to make reservation’s and you need to change before you sit for dinner.
Farms & Flower Fields
North Fork Sunflower Maze 8350 Wickham Ave, Mattituck
Hands down the best sunflower display on the North Fork. The sunflowers seem to go on forever, and starting in mid-July the flowers already are popping up! We went on a weekday so we were there almost totally alone, but the field is large enough I imagine you never really feel on top of other onlookers. And on the weekends they have farm animals for kids to see.
Lavender By the Bay 7540 Main Rd, East Marion
While the fields only have Lavender from June to July, I highly recommend stopping by the store and grabbing their lavender honey. They have everything from hand and body lotion to dried lavender you can purchase as well.
Wickham’s Fruit Farm 28700 Main Rd, Cutchogue
Jackie and & I stopped by Wickham’s fruit farm for the sugar-coated donuts and honey and ended up picking blueberries and blackberries. You can take as long as you want, or quickly fill up your containers and head onto lunch as we did. Definitely, a fun thing to do with kids!
Harbes Family Farm 715 Sound Ave, Mattituck
Get the sweet and salty popcorn! And in August I swear this is the best corn you’ll ever have!
